Behind the Headlines
Why is India having a covid-19 surge?
Forgive me for talking even more about CoVID-19 as I’m sure you’ve been inundated with news about the pandemic for the past year. However, I thought I would share the crisis that is currently happening in India. If you are not already aware, India is experiencing a severe surge in CoVID-19 cases which the health system there cannot handle. The article linked discusses some of the important information about this current surge, and what factors may have led to its progression.
Important points from the article:
At the time of the article’s writing, the daily count of new SARS-CoV-2 infections reached a world record of 360,960
Article suggests that “people dropped their guard after the first wave”
Government eased restrictions to allow malls, theatres and sporting events to occur - including mass political rallies with little social distancing and mask wearing
Reinfection rate has been found to be around 4.5% in a study conducted by Epidemiology and Infection, the Indian Centre for Medical Research
New Indian variant may be less susceptible to antibodies
117 million Indians have had at least one vaccine dose
I hope that reading this article and watching the various news reports on the situation may highlight the severity of the crisis in India, and the importance of public health guidelines and measures both in a pandemic setting, but also ensuring our safety in our day-to-day lives.
Many of our readers, possibly even yourself, have associations and family in India at the moment. We here at CamWAMS send our condolences and support for those affected by the crisis in India, and also to those who have been affected by CoVID-19 throughout the last year. If you wish to donate to a charity, I’ve linked a video by MedLife Crisis (https://youtu.be/DyXq88MrAVQ) which also has links where you can donate.
